Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 1/2 are both excellent and you can buy both on Steam for $10 each. There is also a large multiplayer community for both II and III. There are some incredible player made campaigns that add hours of gameplay to the original game. ArmA II & III come with a mission/campaign editor that is complicated to learn but very comprehensive. Bullets behave very realistically and guns are modeled to fire like they do in real life. When I mean realistic, I mean as close as you can get while still playing a video game. If you want very realistic, tactical gameplay then the ArmA series is for you. Age of Empires takes place in Medieval Times and allows you to play just about any civilization on Earth at the time. The graphics are not hugely improved but are certainly less pixelated on today's high resolution screens. I like that one because there is a very good Lord of the Rings conversion mod.Īge of Empires II HD - a remastered version of the iconic game, Age of Empires II HD brings one of the best RTS games ever into present day. The other one I own is Medieval 2: Kingdoms. Shogun 2 is the next newest and takes place in feudal Japan. It then comes down to how much graphics matter and what era you want to play in.

The newest one, Total War Rome II had issues at launch and I believe still does have some (if someone can update me on the status that'd be great). Total War series - the Total War series has a number of entries and which one gets recommended depends on a number of factors. Less micro-managey than Star Craft but more so than Total War.
Gorgeous graphics, great gameplay and one of it's best features: destructible environment. Simply the best WW2 strategy game ever made CoH allows you to play as the Americans, British or Germans (in CoH 2 you play as Russians/Germans). Company of Heroes - the RTS so good they built a physics engine for it.
